New Orleans Part Duex

I'm finally well enough to think straight (thank you antibiotics and steroid spray) and tell you about the rest of our trip.  First Jennifer's comment reminded me of something I forgot.  Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE in New Orleans was so nice!  It's unfortunate that people being nice stood out so much, but as much as I love the Northwest, the people here aren't as friendly.

Thursday was a big day for us.  We made plans to eat at Emeril's NOLA for our lunch break and our last "session" of the day was a service project at the Louisiana Nature Center.  We were very excited when it was announced that the Honorable John Berry, Director of OPM (Office of Personnel Management for you non-feds) would be joining us on the project.

When we broke for lunch, Cheri and I quickly dropped our things in our hotel room and hopped on the streetcar for the French Quarter.  There on Saint Louis Street, nestled among shops and restaurants was a yellow building, NOLA.  We were seated at the Chef's Bar and were front row to watch as she made "Duck Confit and Fried Egg Pizza" and cooked the Drum (a red fish) in the wood oven.  We asked for her recommendations and placed our order from a menu full of delicious foods.  Cheri had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Breast, I chose the Hickory Smoked Beef Brisket.  We both agreed it was the best meal we'd had, and we were so glad we took the time to eat there.
A blurry phone photo, but let me tell you the pickled green bean in my drink was delish!

After our very filling lunch, we stopped into a tourist shop for a few gifts, and headed back to the hotel to get ready for our service project.  I knew we'd be driving through some hard hit neighborhoods, but seeing houses destroyed next to houses standing was an eye opener to the stark reality that still exists in New Orleans.  The nature center itself is still not "open."  None of the buildings are functional, and there are very few trees that survived.  Most of those that survived the wind were killed by soaking for several weeks in 8 feet of saltwater.

All of us, along with John Berry and Keith Willingham (the Director of CFC) got to work with gloves and loppers pulling giant ragweed from around the young trees planted a year before.  The hope is that it will give these trees a fighting chance for the sunshine they need to grow.

We were tired and dirty after the project, but all of us were happy to have helped.  That night Cheri and I decided that you cannot go to New Orleans without at least seeing Bourbon Street.  So we walked down Bourbon Street, and found a drink she liked.  The Hand Grenade.  We had a light dinner at Ember's Steakhouse.  Neither of us was very hungry, but it was nice to sit outside on the balcony and people watch.

Friday was our last full day in New Orleans.  When Jennifer got the news that she wouldn't be able to make it, we purchased Plantation Tour tickets for Friday afternoon.  I was sad to miss meeting her in person, but it's a great excuse to head South again!  So Friday at the close of our session Cheri and I made our familiar trip on the streetcar.  We had thought we'd eat beignets at Cafe Du Monde before we boarded the bus to Oak Alley, but the cafe was packed.  Instead we ate brunch at The Gumbo Pot, which was really good.  On the bus we enjoyed watching a video about plantations along the Mississippi.  Then our tour guide/bus driver got on the microphone and began to point out all the plantations and tell us their history.  When we arrived at Oak Alley, it was nothing short of amazing.  The 28 300 year old Live Oaks lining the walk up to the house was spectacular.

The house tour is guided by someone in period dress, and you could tell he enjoyed his job.  It was beautiful inside, though no photography is allowed, so you must take my word, or purchase the picture book (I got a signed copy at the gift shop!).  We were all surprised at how small the house is inside.  It looks huge on the outside, but it would actually be a cozy home inside.

After the tour of the home, we stopped at the snack bar right outside to purchase mint juleps and lemonades.  Then we were free to walk the grounds.  Of course it was during this time that my camera died, as some dummy tried to charge the battery by putting it in backwards, and didn't realize the mistake until it was too late.  My phone was also going dead, as the same dummy didn't charge it the night before.  And that is the reason I had to purchase the picture book.  I also purchased a signed Oak Alley cookbook in the gift shop.

The ride back to New Orleans was longer for two reasons.  First the tour guide drives the old hwy that follows the river and goes past many plantations.  He would slow down for us to get a good look and tell us about each home.  We also got to see a really old cemetery.  So old that many of the crypts were falling apart.  This part of Louisiana was so beautiful, and honestly reminded me a lot of the Valley surrounding my home.  Of course we have hills and there wasn't a one in sight there.  The other reason the drive back took so long is that something happened to cause a huge traffic backup as we were going into New Orleans.  We watched some more videos, and eventually the driver resorted to telling us what he could about the area we were in and what happened in the days and weeks following Katrina.

We finished the evening with beignets at Cafe Du Monde, and taking in the French Quarter homes one last time.  It was sad to pack everything up that night, although I was very ready to get home to Dana and the kids.  I definitely want to return to Louisiana, and sooner is better than later.

New Orleans

I have so much to tell you about my trip to New Orleans.  First off, it was a work trip, so while I was in conference every day, I loved it.  I love all my colleagues from CFC and really enjoy all the ideas I get working with them.
Musician on the Riverwalk

Second, while it was a work trip, we had time for fun.  The first full day we were there we walked the Riverwalk into the French Quarter and wandered around.  We didn't have our first meeting until 1 p.m. so we enjoyed looking in the shops and had lunch at Poppy's Time Out which was right outside our hotel.  I had a half a Muffaletta Sandwich.

As you can see it was huge!  I ended up eating one half of my half sandwich at lunch and the other half at dinner.  That evening we took the streetcar into the French Quarter and went on a Haunted History tour.  It was so much fun hearing all the stories from the tour guide as we walked through the historic streets.  While waiting to take the streetcar back, I picked up one of the seashells that can be found all over the tracks.

View from our window

The next day started early and we were in conferences all day long.  Lunch was a reception where the speaker was from the Coast Guard and she filled us in about the Oil Spill response.  We were tired by the end of a long day of conferences, and we walked up the road to Mother's for dinner.  I had a fried shrimp Po' Boy and a cup of chicken and andouille gumbo.  Yum!

To be continued...

Hanging In

It never slows down at our house!  Alice is healing quite nicely.  After several days of her destroying the carrier by spilling water and spreading litter, we decided to let her have Kaia's room to roam in.  It's a few days earlier than the vet recommended, however she was just so darn active.

I'm busy preparing to leave for New Orleans.  Dana and I spent last weekend really cleaning up the house, so now it's just keeping it picked up before I leave.  I also will be buying plenty of quick and easy meals for Dana and Kaia as they bach' it.  The boys will be staying with Grammy and Papa, and I'm pretty sure the Bobos will forget all about me while I'm gone.  They love Grammy and Papa.

And in the midst of all this, I got really sick.  I ended up on antibiotics and off my fast.  I'm starting to feel better now, but have a horrible barking cough.  So with the sickness has come lots and lots of sleep.  And that my friends, is a good thing.

The much needed Vacay

I needed that vacation, going back to work this week has been insane!  I'm officially working in my new job capacity, which has left me extremely busy.  Add to that the stomach bug I came down with Wednesday evening, and had to take half a day off Thursday, and I'm ready for this weekend!  Lots of exciting stuff happening, so more posts to come soon.  For now, a few vacation photos.

Washington DC

We survived the heat, the humidity nearly killed us, and Obama didn't come to our awards ceremony.  We went to Obama, or his likeness anyway.  We didn't do nearly as many things as we would have liked, but our time was short and it was too hot to be active.  We did an evening tour of the monuments, which were phenomenal in spite of a power outage.  A ticket on the double decker bus allowed us to view much of the city in comfort and provided a nice way to get around town.  Overall it was a fabulous trip.

Tomorrow, Tomorrow...

First, I want to tell you that I spelled that title without my spell check lighting up!  WooHoo, I have finally taught myself to correctly spell the blasted word.  Now to just work on vaccuum, or vacuum as it is actually spelled.

And I should know all about vacuum right now, as yesterday I left work early to pick up, vacuum, clean carpets, and steam clean floors.  The public rooms of our house are clean!  I feel so domestic now.

I also hit the grocery store and picked up the necessary foods for Dana to survive while I'm away.  Frozen beef taquitos, Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches and a big box of Lucky Charms.  I secretly think Dana and the kids like me leaving, because I buy food normally left off the list to stock the house when I'm gone.  There are also a few bean and cheese burritos still in the freezer from my Ft. Worth trip.

Tomorrow is the big day!  I'm being picked up in the morning and we're driving to the airport, and some time around 11:18 pm EST, I'll be in DC.  I'm finally excited instead of stressed.  Although I do have moments of panic.  I still have to pick up Dana's prescriptions and finish packing, but I am ready.  The only thing I don't have, is cute sundresses to wear in the heat there.  It's not because I didn't look.  I went to Target and ShopKo, but didn't find anything that I thought was decent to wear and reasonably priced.

I borrowed a very nice blue skirt suit from my friend, but with the weather forecast, I may just leave it at home.  I don't think it will be bearable in the heat.  Instead I'm opting for my silk dress.  The silk dress that didn't fit until my friend/coworker gave me her pair of Spanx.  It took me down a size and my dress fits beautifully now.

Expect lots of photos in the next few days!  And no posts on forgotten luggage, thanks to traveling with others.  I do have one request though: Anyone know how to best pack my silk dress so that it isn't horribly disfigured by the time I get to DC?

The Return

We are back from the Oregon Coast! The kids really did have a great time, hard to see with the frog faces in the above photo taken from the deck of the beach house. The weather was nice. Low to upper 60's most of the week. A welcome relief from the 100's!

I'll post more about our trip, and some photos soon. Dana was the photographer and he took all his photos raw, which means more editing before they are ready to view. They should be excellent though, as his photos always are.

Miniature Golf Leavenworth Style

One of our favorite things to do in Leavenworth is to go miniature golfing. This is a cute 18 hole course, and always provides a fun time (plus it's near a great little burger joint).

Here's Dana getting out of the trap.

My pink purse goes everywhere with me. Including golfing.

The "river" that runs through the course. (It is dyed blue)

One of the windmills. I can't remember if this is the one you putt through or not.

It was a very close game. I managed 3 hole-in-one's, and I'm still not sure if I won by 1 or if we tied. I added at least 3 times. Good thing we weren't too concerned about math on our weekend together. I did completely lose the game of air hockey we played in the arcade inside. The machine did the math for us.

After our fun, we headed over to the burger joint for... wait for it... burgers and fries! It was great!

Slight Interruption

Sorry for the lack of posting this weekend. Dana and I had a much needed get-away. We got away from the house, the kids, the pets. Yes, we love them all, but we needed some time ALONE. We don't get that much. We stayed here:

And we really enjoyed soaking in this:

I have many more photos to share and will do so very soon!

The Weather

Jen asked me just what the temperature was at the beach. On the Oregon Coast, you wear layers. The forecast said 76 degree high in Lincoln City one morning. Looking out the window, we didn't believe the guy. Good thing too, he was wrong! It was right about 70 degrees the day we got there. The temps were pretty much in the low 60's the entire time we were there, which is fairly normal. The wierd part: The wind stopped. You go to Lincoln City to fly kites. People go and do some para sailing and use stunt kites... and we couldn't get Kaia's simple little diamond shaped unicorn kite up in the air.

First day we arrived, sunny and warm, so Papa Richard went down to the beach.

Second or Third day at the beach. A little bit chillier.

No matter what the weather it was a wonderful time. Still trying to catch up at home and work, so more posts that are not vacation related coming soon!

More Beach Fun

If you have never visited the Oregon Coast, you are missing out! Even though I live in Washington, and I lived in California, the beaches do not compare to the beauty of Oregon.

I love the look on Mo's face!

Kaia visiting the tidepools. This was underwater the rest of our trip.

An otter at the Oregon Aquarium in Newport.

A Puffin enjoying the mild weather. The aviary allows you to be right next to the birds. No touching of course, but it's great to see them up close.

We're Back...

Rocks that we could see from our window.

Starfish on those rocks. First 2 days we had a really low tide. This allowed us to go pet all the starfish, anenomes and small crabs.

We made it home, safe and sound, for the most part. My dad is recovering from his accident on the Harley (he only had a broken rib, separated shoulder, and road rash). I'm sporting a large bruise on my leg (from pushing the trailer out to go get Dad and Dana). My father in law and I enjoyed our time traveling to find the guys (they were almost 2 hours away). It was good bonding.

Kaia at the aquarium.

It's hard to leave the ocean, even if the weather wasn't quite as cooperative as we'd have liked. It's also hard to go from having 4 other adults helping us with the kids, to just the 2 of us. And it's hard to leave a nice clean house, and come home to our mess. Such is life though. I've been picking up the last few days, and doing laundry. Can't wait to visit you all again!

Vacation's all I ever wanted...

This shirt is So True!

Waiting for Papa to land

Papa after landing

It's time! The house isn't super clean, but hopefully our housesitter doesn't notice. Our bags are packed and I'm so ready to be on the coast! It's been a busy day. We got up and I started packing and cleaning while Kaia was at Sabbath School with the neighbors. Then the kids and I were off to see Papa Richard fly (Dana was already there as official cameraman)! We missed the take-off thanks to a meltdown by an unnamed drama queen, but the kids got to enjoy the museum and Kaia even sat in the small simulator and flew.
Then we hit the library, and home to finish cleaning and packing. I will miss blogging, but after a very hectic few weeks, I will enjoy my time at the ocean. The weather appears to be semi-cooperative and in the upper 60's, lower 70's. I don't care, though! I need that peace that only comes from staring into God's creation that is so vast it is hard to imagine that more land lay beyond. I promise to have plenty of photos on my return, and maybe we'll even catch a whale in one shot. My dad did last time we were there. So enjoy your week, I'll be enjoying the salty air, fresh dungeness crab, and time with my family.
If you're curious we are staying at the Ebb Tides.

Home Again Home Again Jiggety Jig

That's right I'm back. Flew in about an hour ago! I'm tired (although the whole travel stuff means I need to wind down a bit before sleeping), and my lungs and eyes are glad to be back in good old Washington State! The liberal Wet-Side has one thing right on... No smoking indoors! I admit to feeling that it was treading on the rights of smokers when the bill was first past. Now after being in Vegas for two separate trips, I'm glad to be in smoke free WA!

The past few mornings my travel companion and I have had a smoker's cough, due to all the cigarettes we've inhaled, and my eyes are in need of the allergy drops the doctor gave me every few hours!

I tried to check in, but the internet connection was PRICEY! So I made a quick stop by Arts, to see he was on a break, and then while waiting for Jen's page to load, the PC shut down on me! I was paying 69 cents a minute and lost the connection. So I hurried over to end my session, which the PC had already ended so not another minute could be charged.

I will try to catch up with all soon! It is my busy weekend though. A certain little man's 2nd birthday party and a baby shower. Sad to say the shower is more planned than the party, but I'm working on that.

Back In Yak

Yes, I did make it home safely, thanks for all the prayers! Last night was nothing short of... frustrating?... enraging? Well all of the above. And we weren't even flying American! Our flight out of Las Vegas had a number of issues that caused us to arrive in SeaTac 40 minutes late. By the time we disembarked the train and caught the underground tram to the concourse we needed... yep missed our connection! So that was the 6:20 p.m. flight. Next flight to Yakima? 11:20, except that it was already pushed back to 11:55, and then 12:14 a.m. Lovely! So we used our $8 meal vouchers (tell me where you can buy an airport dinner for $8?) and waited, and waited, and waited.

The good thing about flying into a very small city, is that we knew almost everyone waiting on the same plane. Yep, another Board Member was there, some of our leadership givers, and a gal that volunteered when I worked at Camp Fire USA. We did finally arrive home. The guys dropped me off (Dana and the kids were supposed to have picked me up, but not that late) and it was 1:20 a.m.

I got about 3 hours of sleep all night, since Mo was having a bad night and I didn't have the heart to let him cry it out. Today it's vertigo, and the medicine is not helping. So much for all the work on my desk. I will be one busy girl tomorrow! I'll post more on the trip later, the window guy is ready to start installing our new back door!

Still Alive

Thank you all for the well wishes and prayers (and compliments)! I'm well, but tired. And will post photos when I return!

Bye-Bye!

I'll see you all soon! Thanks to my friends for lending me clothes, and helping buy shoes so I can feel like I have a new wardrobe. Thanks to my parents for some spending money (and June who offered). Thanks to June for watching the kids, and Dana for making sure Kaia gets up and dressed and to school on time (a MAJOR chore!). Thanks to God for the upper 70's and low 80's in Vegas! I will enjoy, and have plenty of photos on my return.

The Monkeys

Expecting some photos of the kids, were you? Nope. Photos Dana took during our visit to the zoo in Portland in 2006. Yes, I know that technically these aren't monkeys. Well maybe the first, but The Primates just didn't make a good title.

The Average High in April is 78 degrees

I can't wait for Las Vegas and that 78 degrees. Yakima's average temp is 64 degrees during April. My traveling companion Barb and I are counting down the days. Although I will actually be going down there for a separate conference the week before I go down with Barb. So April will bring plenty of travel my way.

This travel luckily is after my birthday, so I have no problem coming up with an answer to the question "What would you like for your birthday?" And the second trip is right before Mo's birthday, so I will have my work cut out for me preparing for it in between conferences and in the 2 days between when I return and Mo's party.

Last time I visited Vegas I was 19 years old. I was there for 36 hours to watch a friend's brother compete in the regional gymnastics competition. We arrived at 2 a.m. and I crawled into a queen size bed where a girl I'd never met, only heard about, was already sleeping. We introduced ourselves in the morning when we woke up. That day we were at the competition. That evening the family and friends all had dinner together at Circus Circus. Then my friend and I and her boyfriend and brother all walked the strip back to our hotel the MGM. We watched the show at Treasure Island, and the water/laser show at the Mirage and then went to bed. We got up and left for Pepperdine so we could do our homework and get some sleep before classes Monday morning.

Barb said last time she was in Vegas she got married. So I expect we'll have a good time, even if we are in conferences most of the day.

The Beach is calling

It's a balmy 27 degrees out today, and a snow warning was in effect. Although such a small amount has fallen, that it is hard to believe that we will get the 5 inches they were calling for today. Oh now they've updated it to just 1-2 inches. All of this makes our vacation planning that much sweeter!

The following photos are not mine. They are from the Lincoln City Vacation Homes website.

That is the front of the house, and you can see the beach access is right next to the car.

I think that making dinner won't be such a chore for us girls, not with this view anyway.

Ahhh... I can't wait for this summer. We (Dana, the kids, both sets of grandparents and I) will definitely enjoy this beach house!
